β€˜All Clear' After Arlington Businesses, Including Day Care, Evacuated for Gas Leak

The "All Clear" has been given in Arlington after several businesses along a block of East Abram Street were evacuated Wednesday morning due to a minor gas leak.[[345854542,C]]

A construction crew working on the eastbound lanes of Abram Street cut through an 8-inch gas line, causing the leak, according to firefighters.

Officials said all businesses on Abram Street between New York Avenue and Browning Drive, including the Abram Head Start and Child Development Center, were evacuated beginning at about 8:45 a.m.

Police said they moved about 50 children from the day care β€” ages 3 to 4 years old β€” to a tire shop down the street. Parents were notified to pick up their children.

The Arlington hazmat team was called to the scene while police closed Abram Street in the affected area to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Just before 11 a.m., with the gas having been turned off, the "All Clear" was given and the evacuation was lifted.

Arlington firefighters said they think it will take about four hours to repair the line and restore service.

No injuries were reported. Two adults affected by fumes were transported to hospitals as a precaution.

The Abram Head Start and Child Development Center said they would be open for business on Thursday.

NBC 5's Tim Ciesco contributed to this report.
