A hearing will be held on Friday, May 28, to determine the custody of 75 animals seized from a property in Leonard. With the assistance of the Fannin County Sheriffs Department, the SPCA of Texas seized 65 dogs and 10 cats.

The SPCA said many of the dogs were being cruelly confined, about half are underweight and many have various medical issues including open sores and eye discharge.

The cats and kittens are emaciated, according to the SPCA, and were in need of immediate veterinary care.  The animals were taken from the Domestic Animal Rescue Shelter Service, a  group which previously had a contract with the city of Ferris to handle pet adoptions.

The SPCA received an anonymous tip about the animals and they have since been moved to the Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney. If the SPCA is awarded custody of the animals, they will be evaluated individually for potential adoption.
