Animal Shelter Discounts Black Cat Adoptions

The Mesquite Animal Shelter is at max capacity, so the staff is offering reduced adoption fees for particular type of animal through Halloween.

Through Oct. 31, all predominantly black animals can be adopted at half price as a part of the shelter's "Howl-o-Ween" program. The policy is a change from years past, when some shelters restricted black cat adoptions out of worry that they were only being adopted for Halloween tricks.

"For us to stop adoptions of what we have the most of and deny them getting a forever home just doesn't seem like the right thing to do," Animal Shelter Supervisor Anne Simmons said.

Any animal already spayed or neutered will now have an adoption fee of $35, which includes vaccinations, microchip implants and a one-year city registration. The adoption fee for animals requiring the mandated sterilization is $80 for cats and $100 for dogs.
