American Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing

Authorities in Turks & Caicos say an American Airlines plane has made a safe emergency landing after the pilot reported a fire in the cockpit and a smoking engine.

The British Caribbean territory's disaster office says there were no injuries to the 175 people aboard the Boeing 757.

Representatives of American Airlines did not immediately provide comment.

The plane was traveling from Trinidad to Miami on Tuesday morning when the pilot requested clearance for the emergency landing. Turks & Caicos says he reported a fire and said the left engine was smoking and dripping fuel.

A local newspaper showed images of firefighters spraying water on the American Airlines jet while it sat on a runway. It was not smoking and showed no obvious signs of damage.
