Alamo Caretakers Dispute Negative State Report

The caretakers of the Alamo have rejected as inaccurate a state report critical of how they manage the shrine in San Antonio.

The Texas attorney general's office on Tuesday released the 38-page report which alleges misuse of state funds and failure to preserve and maintain the Alamo. The report goes to the 2013 Legislature.

The president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas on Tuesday night noted the report does not require any changes to comply with state law. Karen Thompson says issues identified nearly three years ago have been resolved, including leadership changes, continued external auditing and cooperation with preservation programs.

Allegations of mismanagement and financial incompetence led lawmakers to put the Alamo under the General Land Office. The Daughters remain the primary caretakers but face stricter oversight.
