Texas A&M University officials say they have bought up 15 dot-xxx domain names to keep the porn industry from associating itself with various Aggie trademarks.
The purchases are part of a trend of companies and universities paying to avoid inadvertently becoming associated with pornographic websites.
A&M spokesman Jason Cook tells The Eagle of Bryan-College Station that university administrators chose to protect the university's federally protected trademarks, including its mascot "Reveille," at a cost of $3,000 to $5,000.
The University of Texas at Austin also blocked about a dozen names, such as "hookemhorns.xxx." UT spokesman Gary Suswein says university administrators view the move "as an insurance policy."
