Abortion Doctors Sue to Recover Admitting Rights

Two doctors who perform abortions have sued a Dallas hospital alleging that their admitting privileges were illegally revoked after a court upheld strict new Texas abortion restrictions.

Dr. Lamar Robinson and Dr. Jasbir Ahluwalia perform abortions on their own time, away from the hospital.

A Texas law approved last summer requires doctors to have hospital admitting privileges within 30 miles of where they perform abortions.

University General Hospital in Dallas originally granted both doctors admitting privileges. But on March 27, a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel found the rules constitutional.

The suit filed Thursday alleges the doctors had their admitting privileges revoked four days later. They seek a Dallas County court order restoring their admitting privileges but no monetary damages.

Hospital spokeswoman Lori Stahl had no immediate comment.
