10-Term Texas Democrat Hinojosa to Retire

Veteran Democratic Rep. Ruben Hinojosa has said he won't seek re-election next year after nearly 20 years in office.

The 75-year-old Hinojosa announced his plans Friday at a news conference in McAllen, Texas.

Hinojosa is serving his 10th term in Congress and was first elected in 1996. He'll serve out on his current term, which ends in January 2017.

Texas' District 15, stretching from the Rio Grande Valley to an area southeast of San Antonio, has a heavy concentration of Hispanic voters and usually leans Democratic.

Hinojosa, who's from Mercedes, served as chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which represents Latino lawmakers, in 2013 and 2014.

He's pushed legislation increasing federal aid for Hispanic students and easing the path to citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
