A Streetcar Named Dallas?

Downtown routes would link distant attractions

Dallas city leaders are reviewing possible routes for a downtown street car system that would link distant attractions.

The system would link distant locations such as the convention center and the arts district, which most  people consider too far apart for walking.

Councilwoman Angela Hunt, who represents the downtown area, is a big supporter of the project. Downtown Dallas has islands of activity that aren't connected, she said.

"So if you want to get from the arts district to the west end, you've got to jump in your car," Hunt said. "We envision a way to get around downtown without a car, and that's a streetcar system."

Hunt said the system could also attract new development along the route, which could later be expanded from an initial starter route.

Construction may be years away. Planners are still looking for financing for the system.
