8-Year-Old Boy Shot by Playmate: Texas City Police

Texas City police say an 8-year-old boy is being treated for a gunshot wound after being shot in the face while playing with his 7-year-old cousin.

Capt. Joe Stanton says the child was taken to a Houston hospital and had surgery Thursday evening. His condition was not immediately available.

Stanton says the boys were playing unsupervised at a Texas City apartment. He says the 7-year-old found a handgun and it discharged. The 8-year-old was shot in the left cheek.

Stanton says the boy was conscious and alert when placed on a helicopter.

Police say there were no adults in the apartment when they arrived. Stanton says a boyfriend of the victim's mother may have been responsible for supervising the children.

The shooting is being reviewed by Texas Child Protective Services.
