Boy, 7, Survives Hit-and-Run on His Birthday

Police searching for hit-and-run driver; victim recovering

A 7-year-old boy who was hit by a truck shortly before his birthday party was to begin Saturday is out of the hospital and back home with his family.

Lorenzu Cantu returned home from the hospital late Sunday afternoon.  He missed his birthday party on Saturday, but another party was planned for when his mother carried him in the door Sunday --  and the 7-year-old was all smiles.

“He has got the best present there is right now. He has another chance of life,” said grandfather Oscar Andrade.

Cantu was taken to the hospital after being hit by a pick-up truck in the 3100 block of Conroe Street of West Dallas Saturday afternoon.

The driver that hit Cantu never stopped.

Andrade said the family was preparing for Cantu's birthday party when the boy ran out into the street and was hit by a pick-up truck. Cantu was taken to the hospital after lying in the street for minutes. He left the hospital with a concussion and broken toes.

Police do not have the license plate of the vehicle or a description of the driver. However, the truck is described as a white or cream-colored pickup truck.

A home surveillance camera captured the moment of impact between the pick-up truck and the boy. It wasn’t until late last night that his mother finally saw the surveillance video, which she found chilling.

"The whole night, I had that image,” said Lorenzo's mother Victoria Cantu.

“You see videos like this on the news, or on YouTube, but when you it actually happens to you it's like, 'Wow. It is an ugly thing,'” said Andrade.

His family hopes someone is caught soon.

“I hope you slept real good last night, cause we didn't,” added Andrade.
