500 Dallas Homeless Arrive at Omni for Christmas Eve

Hundreds of people arrive at Dallas Omni for a special Christmas Eve celebration.

The SoupMobile and Dallas Omni Hotel are hosting more than 500 men, women and children this Christmas Eve.

It’s an annual event that gives homeless people a place to stay, warm food, and clothing for the holiday.

Drivers brought the guests to the hotel in five charter buses. As the homeless people got off the bus, they were greeted by a marching band and hundreds of clapping volunteers lining the sidewalk.

"It was unexpected," said Joshua Simpson. "I didn’t know the horns was going to be playing, the red carpet. Everyone out there greeting you, man. It was like fabulous to me, man."

The guests will stay in a room for one night and go to several banquets.

"It’s a long journey for many of them," said ‘Soupman’ David Timothy. "But we are so proud with the SoupMobile, with the help of thousands of volunteers, we can give our homeless guests a magical Christmas."

Simpson said this event is an inspiration to the hundreds of people who are down on their luck.

"This is for the individuals that are unfortunate," Simpson said. "Or just had a wrong turn, or a trip and fall, or a stump up or something like that. This right here is an uplifter, a booster you know."

NBC 5 has almost reached our goal for our "Home for the Holidays" campaign. It’s our effort to help a family in need get back on their feet.

A one-time $12 donation goes to a year’s worth of food, rent and utilities for that family. Here is how you can donate.
