$30,000 in Gold Coins Stolen from Widow

Police in Southeast Texas are searching for two people posing as yard workers who made off with a widow's collection of gold coins valued at $30,000.

The Galveston County Daily News reports that the theft happened Tuesday in Santa Fe, between Houston and Galveston. Police said one of the thieves was talking to 77-year-old Elaine Harris when the other snuck into the home and grabbed a large box and safe.

The box and safe included a collection of gold and silver coins collected by her late husband.

Harris says the person talking to her claimed to be there to cut tree limbs.

She didn't notice the safe was gone until Wednesday.

The theft comes one week after someone allegedly stole $1,500 worth in quarters from a trailer.
