Dallas firefighters said two units responded to the 2900 block of Peavy Road and found two apartments heavily damaged by fire.

Two people were transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation. Their conditions are not known.

At least one other person was treated at the scene for cuts and bruises.

A woman told NBC 5 that her son woke her up and told her about the fire. She said the only wan out was a back window, so she and her son jumped from their second-floor apartment to escape.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans later told NBC 5 the fire was caused when food was left cooking unattended on a kitchen stove in a first-floor apartment. The fire consumed the entire kitchen before igniting the apartment patio above.

The American Red cross is helping at least 10 families displaced by the fire, firefighters said. Damage was estimated to cost about $28,000, Evans said in a written statement.

NBC 5's Ben Russell contributed to this report.
