3 Dead, 3 Hurt as Car Slams into Rear of 18-Wheeler

A car slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer rig on a highway in the West Texas plains, killing three and critically injuring three others in the car.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the crash happened about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday about 30 miles east of Lubbock on the eastern fringe of the small town of Ralls. DPS Trooper John Gonzalez says it appears the car was eastbound on U.S. 62-82 when it crashed into the 18-wheeler, which was stopped to turn into a fertilizer plant.

The dead included two adult passengers of the car and a toddler. The three taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock were the driver and two passengers.

The truck driver wasn't injured.

The speed limit on the four-lane highway is 75 mph.
