3 Parking Towers Demolished at Astrodome

Three parking ramp towers at the Astrodome have been demolished as the fate of the sprawling Houston icon remains uncertain.

Crews using explosives imploded the towers in a matter of seconds Sunday night, leaving behind tons of rubble to be recycled.

Harris County voters last month rejected a $217 million bond issue that would have turned the Astrodome into an events center.

The towers were constructed in the late 1980s to help accommodate an expansion meant to keep the Oilers football team in Houston. The team left for Tennessee following the 1996 NFL season.

Construction of ramps inside the towers also brought the Astrodome into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
