3 A.M. Text Ad Angers North Texans

Fort Worth resident Carol Nowers keeps her phone by her bed in case of an emergency.

"I don't have a land line, because the only people that would ever call would be telemarketers," Nowers said.

But a spammer with her number decided to send a text to her early Friday morning.

"It goes off and I was wondering who was texting me at 3 o'clock in the morning. So l looked, and didn't recognize the number, and I couldn't go back to bed," Nowers said from her Fort Worth apartment.

The texter sent a message asking if she wanted to refinance her home.

"I rent, so no, I don't," Nowers said.

The company put down a Web site, www.modifymortgage.us, and attached a phone number. NBCDFW.COM called the number to find out how they got her number, and why they were texting so early. The number was invalid, and the Web site is down.

As it turns out, dozens of people are complaining about the same company in online forums.

Nowers isn't sure how the company got her number. She said she doesn't sign up for financial alerts or texts to her phone.

People getting spam calls on their cell phone can put their personal cell phone on the government's "Do Not Call" list by visiting www.donotcall.gov.
