2 Dead After Shooting in Royse City

The incident happened around 3 a.m. Sunday

Two people were found dead of gunshot wounds in Royse City early Sunday morning, police wrote on Facebook.

Royse City police officers responded to call for gunshots in the 3100 block of Overstreet Lane shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, they found two people dead at the scene.

Police said they believed there was at least one more person at the scene, but that person left before officers arrived.

Police said they are still actively investigating the shooting and asked that anyone with information call them 972-636-9422.

Monday morning, a spokesperson for the department told NBC 5 they are treating this as an "isolated incident" and they do not believe there is a greater public safety threat to the community.

They also said investigators are now following up on "solid leads".

They declined to provide additional details, saying that doing so at this point could jeopardize their investigation.

The names of the two victims have not been released.

Royse City ISD tweeted Sunday that one of the people shot was a current Royse City High School student, while the other was a former student.

Neighbors told NBC 5 the victims lived in separate homes on the same block. Both were shot in the street outside their homes.

"Just six or seven gunshots and it woke us straight up," neighbor Timothy Reed said. "It was so loud."

The shooting happened in a cul-de-sac located in the residential neighborhood where children were playing outside as reporters spoke with neighbors Sunday evening.

"There is no telling why this happened," Reed said. "It's just bad that it did, especially in this quiet neighborhood."
