2 Dead, 3 Hospitalized, 1 Charged in Hit-and-Run Crash

Two teens are dead, three other people are hospitalized and a man is in custody charged with multiple hit-and-run counts after a two-vehicle collision in Central Texas.

The crash happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday at an intersection on an Interstate 35 frontage road in Kyle, 18 miles (29 kilometers) south of Austin. Kyle Police chief Jeff Barnett said a pickup truck slammed into car containing a driver and four passengers. Two girls, ages 18 and 16, were killed instantly despite wearing seatbelts. The three other occupants of the car were taken to hospitals. None of their identities have been released, but Barnett said they all were from out of town. He said the injuries of the three were not thought life-threatening.

Barnett said 61-year-old Macario M. Hernandez of Buda fled his truck's wreckage on foot but was quickly found and arrested by Hays County sheriff's deputies. He's jailed with bonds totaling $250,000.
