17-Year-Old's Shooting Death Is 99th Homicide in Dallas This Year

Dallas police are asking for help finding the person who shot and killed a 17-year-old in Pleasant Grove Tuesday.

The shooting happened at about 5:14 p.m. Tuesday in the 3600 block of Cedar Lake Drive, according to Dallas police.

Police said they found 17-year-old Valdemar Esquivel in a blue Ford F-150 with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The homicide is the 99th in Dallas in 2019.

Esquivel's friend, Aaron Chairez told NBC 5 Esquivel was in the car and the gunman opened fire after Esquivel had honked at the vehicle.

"He just started shooting at us, then I got down and my sister got down," Chairez said. "(Esquivel) just looked at me and slumped over and I kept screaming his name."

Dallas police posted on Facebook at 6:02 p.m. Tuesday, "12 Consecutive Days Without a Murder." According to police investigators, calls related to Esquivel's murder had actually come in about 45 minutes earlier -- at 5:14 p.m.

"Even with this going on, I've only seen one patrol car, this whole morning. I've been here since eight in the morning," Diego Alfaro, Esquivel's friend said.

Friends and neighbors of Esquivel said they were worried the violence would continue.

"Every day you wake up in Pleasant Grove and you fear," Chairez said.

Police said they had not made any arrests in relation to the shooting and asked that anyone with information about it contact police Det. Abel Lopez at 214-671-3676 or abel.lopez@dallascityhall.com.
