14-Year-Old Killed While Crossing Street with Skateboard

A North Texas community is in mourning after a 14-year-old boy was hit and killed while crossing the street with his skateboard.

Haltom High School freshman Devon Jesse was hit by a car on Watauga Road. He died from his injuries Sunday.

"We just send all of our prayers," said Lory Zunija, whose son played football with Jesse at Haltom High School. "May he rest in peace."

Friends, classmates and parents visited a growing memorial along the site of the accident Monday.

"We saw his mother and family by the roadside memorial," said Vanessa Campos, a Haltom High School student. "It's just been really intense."

Grief counselors were made available to students at the school. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Tuesday evening.

The driver, whom police have not identified, has not been cited. Police say their investigation has determined the driver continued approximately 600 feet beyond the point of impact and stopped at a nearby service station, where a witness informed her that her vehicle had just struck a person. The driver then immediately returned to the scene and waited for police to arrive, police said.

Police say their investigation continues, and that several accounts of the incident written on social media have been determined to be inaccurate.

Any eyewitnesses are asked to call Watauga police at 817-514-5783.
