13-Year-Old Girl Who Fought Rare Cancer Dies

13-year-old's positive attitude inspired North Texans

A 13-year-old Kaufman County girl whose fight with cancer touched hearts across North Texas has died.

Laurren Smith's father said Friday that his daughter had lost her battle with osteosarcoma, a rare cancer.

The first tumors appeared two years ago, and doctors earlier this year told her she had only months to live.

"I thought, 'Wow, a couple of months, that's all,'" Laurren said in an interview in September. "I wish it'd be longer, but that's all; but I wasn't scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared of anything."

Laurren decided to embrace life and make every day count.

"I didn't pray for God to heal me," she said. "I prayed for God to give me a positive attitude."

Her story inspired those around her and those who read about her.

"You got to have strength through everything -- all your ups and downs, everything -- and you have to keep your attitude positive," she said.

Fearing the end was near, her family and friends celebrated Christmas with her in October.

Her funeral service will be held at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall at 1 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of lowers, her family is requesting donations be made to the BKM Foundation.
