Woman Seriously Injured in Dallas Wrong-Way Crash

A 21-year-old Dallas woman was seriously injured in a wrong-way crash with a driver accused of driving while intoxicated.

Police said Britnni Dietz was driving southbound in the left lane on Central Expressway early Friday morning when a black sedan struck her vehicle.

"I was surprised that anyone lived through it," said Lt. Scott Bratcher, of the Vehicle Crimes Unit.

Dietz, who waits tables at Texas Roadhouse in Mesquite to pay her way through college, has two broken legs, a cracked pelvis and internal bleeding.

"One would hope she can recover and not be injured the rest of her life," Bratcher said. "She has a long life in front of her."

Dietz is in serious condition at Baylor Medical Center.

Friends from work visited her Friday and donated blood, hoping it could help.

Dietz has undergone two surgeries so far.

Ahmed Figueroa, 31, was arrested on suspicion of intoxication assault.

Police said he told investigators that he couldn't recall where he'd been before the crash or how much he'd had to drink.

"Central Expressway with its design now is so well-lit, I find it hard to believe someone could be impaired so much they could go the wrong way on Central," Bratcher said.

Police said Figueroa was driving in the left-hand lane, where most wrong-way collisions occur.

"They get on the roadway, pull as far to the right as they can, thinking they are in the slow lane of the road they are on when, in effect, they are in the fast lane of oncoming traffic," Bratcher said.

Figueroa has previously been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. According to court documents, he was on probation at the time of Friday's crash for a 2008 DWI in Irving.

Figueroa is being treated for a broken leg at the same hospital and is expected to be transported to the Dallas County Jail over the weekend.
