$12 Million To Support Transformative Medical Research

Studies on cells in metabolism will be part of what comes out of a $12 million gift to Children's Research Institute at UT Southwestern.

The money will establish a prestigious faculty scholar program designed to attract the world’s top scientists to Dallas to work alongside other researchers at Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern and will fuel their research for the next decade.

The first Robert L. Moody, Sr., Faculty Scholar will be Dr. Ralph DeBerardinis, director of CRI’s Genetic and Metabolic Disease Program.

"The hypothesis in our lab is changes in metobolic activity really underlie many of the diseases that we treat at Children's Health. Diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease and also rare genetic diseases," said Dr. DeBerardinis.

The commitment from the Moody Foundation provides for an immediate $5 million gift to create a new Robert L. Moody, Sr., Faculty Scholar endowment, which will support the research of a leading scientist in CRI.

In addition, the Moody Foundation will fund world-class medical research at CRI for at least 10 years with a distribution of $700,000 or more every year, according to a press release from Children's Health.
