Firefighters responded just after midnight to a fire in the 4900 block of Berridge Lane and saw heavy smoke coming from a window of a room in the front of the home, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and found a man dead inside the room.

Later Monday evening, authorities said they concluded the man had been killed before the fire started. His name was not released.

Four people lived in the other side of the duplex and made it out of the house safely. The American Red Cross is assisting them.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Dallas police ask that anyone with information about the case call the Dallas Police Department Homicide Unit at 214-671-3702.
