1 Arrest at San Antonio Rallies About Confederate Statue

One person has been charged with misdemeanor assault and police say a second was detained but not charged after about 300 demonstrators showed up at competing rallies over the presence of a Confederate monument in downtown San Antonio.

Two city council members have filed a request to move the monument elsewhere. The 40-foot monument at Travis Park features a soldier at the top. It was erected in 1899.

Police kept the protesters Saturday afternoon barricaded on separate sides of the park although some from each side walked to the other side and shouted slurs and profanity to try to provoke a response.

Officers then would pull them apart.

A similar rally was held last month.
