American Red Cross needs your help to install free smoke alarms for local at-risk homes. Please volunteer today at www.redcross.org or www.cruzrojaamericana.org.
During the first weekend of Sound the Alarm, a national campaign in which the Red Cross installs free smoke alarms, changes batteries in existing alarms and provides home fire safety education in at-risk homes, local Red Cross volunteers and partners installed more than 700 free smoke alarms in more than 320 homes.
Through May 11, volunteers, partners and fire departments will install 100,000 free smoke alarms during the national effort to Sound the Alarm against home fires. In DFW, hundreds of volunteers will install more than 1,600 free alarms across the Metroplex.

During Sound the Alarm events, Red Cross volunteers, fire departments and community partners go door-to-door to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create home fire escape plans. The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign launched in 2014 to reduce fire deaths and injuries. To date, the Red Cross and its partners have installed more than 1.6 million free smoke alarms and helped save more than 580 lives nationwide in homes that received free alarms and subsequently suffered a home fire.
In 2018, the North Texas Red Cross and our partners:
- Installed nearly 8,000 free smoke alarms
- Made more than 3,100 households safer through smoke alarm installations and home fire safety education
- Reached more than 2,400 children through youth preparedness programs
