Smoking Banned in Benbrook Parks

Smokers in Benbrook will have to pay extra attention to where they light up or face a hefty fine.

Earlier this month, the city council adopted an ordinance banning smoking in all areas of city parks except for the parking lots.

The ordinance is designed to protect children from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke while still allowing smokers a place to light up.

"The council felt that this is a good, fair compromise," city manager Andy Wayman told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "We’re not saying you can’t smoke at all, but do so away from where children are playing."

Similar bans are in place in Flower Mound and Grapevine.

Anyone caught violating the ban is subject to a $500 fine.
