Medical Procedure Takes Patients to Far Away Places

Ambient room helps relax during stressful procedure

Baylor Regional Medical Center in Grapevine is taking a unique approach to relax patients during stressful procedures.

The ambient experience procedure room is one of the first of its kind in the nation, according to the hospital.
Patients choose the lighting and music selection, as well as the scene to be played in monitors on the ceiling.  Patients can even play music from their own iPod.

In addition to making the patient more comfortable, the rooms have a medical benefit as well.

"We've also found we've been able to use less sedation on patients, because they're more relaxed naturally," said Dr. Joseph Hagman, MD, Baylor Regional Medical Center.

Patients can choose from several themes including 'under the water', 'South America', and even 'Africa'.

Selinda Vernon-Clune recently had a procedure done in the ambient room. The avid snorkeler chose a beach scene and said it made a difference in the experience.

"It's nice to have this. It really is. I think it helps," said Clune.

The room has been in use for three months.
