Marathon Helps Local Children

Winners of the Dallas White Rock Lake Marathon are on and off the course.

A record breaking 20,000 runners filled up Victory Plaza Sunday morning for the Dallas White Rock Lake Marathon. But the winners of the race weren't just on the course, they were on the sidelines as well.

With a countdown and a blast of confetti, the athletes competing in the race were off. But this marathon isn't just about clocking a record time, it's about much more. Ask Cody McCasland.

"It's helped me with giving me running legs and walking legs," said McCasland.

McCasland is a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, the primary beneficiary of the race. And Bob Walker, the Executive Vice President at Texas Scottish Rite said McCasland is a wonderful patient

"Oh, Cody is a real special guy. He's been at the hospital for a long time obviously he has prosthesis, he's learned how to walk at the hospital. He's an inspiration to us every day," said Walker.

Texas Scottish Rite focuses on child orthopedics and dyslexia. Thanks to the hospital, McCasland has received several pairs of prosthetic legs at no cost.

"They give me these cool legs and I get to design them. I can walk in walking legs I can do activities in my running legs if I want to," said McCasland.

"I’m doing my longest run, it is going to be 6.2 miles," He said.

Several patients took part in the race along with top athletes. The big winner was Edward Tabut with a time of 2:16:55. But Walker says during this race, they're all winners.

"You see Cody or you see another child with significant problems, makes your pain go away, it makes all the difference in the world." Walker said.
