Male Victims of Domestic Violence No Longer Suffer in Silence

Texas is home to one of the country's only domestic violence shelters for men.

For years, The Family Place in Dallas offered resources and shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children. After realizing there was a great need for resources for male victims of domestic violence, the nonprofit opened a men's shelter.

"It has been such a blessing," said Joshua Miller, who's been living at the shelter for a month with his 2-year-old son. "When my son and I arrived, we didn't know what to expect, but this place and the people here have angel wings."

While one in three women will face physical violence from a partner in their lifetime, one in four men will become victims themselves.

"A lot of people are afraid to speak up," Miller said. "There is the pride issue, and the way it will be looked at, and there is the stigma. Those reasons still can't stop you from getting help. Sometimes enough is enough."

According to Miller he no longer has to suffer in silence. Initially, asking for help came at a cost.

"There is a misconception surrounding domestic violence that men cannot be victims. I remember when I called police for help, when they arrived they put me in handcuffs, but I was the one who called them," he said. "If it wasn't for the witnesses I would be in jail right now."

All 18 beds are full at the men's shelter. For more information about The Family Place click here www.familyplace.org.

Arkansas is the only other state with a men-only shelter for domestic violence victims.
