Girl Gets Heart Transplant, Sister Is Still Waiting

A 7-year-old girl placed on the transplant list along with her sister last spring is headed home nine days after getting a new heart.

Children's Medical Center Dallas spokeswoman says Emily Smith was discharged Wednesday. Her sister, 9-year-old Shayde Smith, remains on the transplant list.

The sisters were both placed on the list on April 3 after being diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy. That means their hearts don't relax like they should between pumps, so they don't properly fill with blood.

Emily got her new heart on Jan. 19 during a five-hour surgery. She'll continue to receive follow-up care at Children's.

The girls are from the Boyd area, about 30 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
