Free Children's Clinic Gets New Digs

Clinic to move from Frisco church to recently purchased house

Volunteers in Collin County are fighting the epidemic of children without health insurance by opening a clinic for families in need.

Frisco Cares Clinic will open its new facility next month in a recently purchased home in the heart of Frisco.

"It's like the Taj Mahal," said Cathy Reynolds, board of directors president. "We're excited."

The children's health clinic currently operates once a week at the Primera Inglesia Bautista church on Fifth Street, providing some basic care and assessments of children whose parents cannot afford health insurance.

"We provide health care for children in Frisco, Celina, Prosper (and) Little Elm who don't have insurance," Reynolds said.

"It's a great place to take your child and take care of them," said Lynnette Cabrera, a former client.

Cabrera and her husband moved to Little Elm from Puerto Rico, but the new job and new home didn't come with health care.

She said over-the-counter medications work for her and her husband but, "When you have kids, you need health insurance."

Cabrera learned of the clinic through her children's school. Now she and her husband both volunteer.

The idea for the clinic was born in 2005. In the last nine months, the Frisco Cares Clinic has treated 341 children.

The new facility in the 6800 block of Oak Street will be open three days a week for appointments. Visits cost $5, and prescriptions for children are free through a partnership with Target.

Grants and donations keep the clinic afloat. Reynolds said she didn't know in recent months if the clinic would be able to stay open, but they were able to get their new home thanks to a city grant.

The house that will home the clinic beginning in February already had a lot of work completed, including fresh paint, new carpeting, wheelchair access and parking.

Volunteers say they'll miss the old room at Primera Inglesia Bautista church, but its congregation and spiritual leaders remain closely involved with the clinic.
