Doctors Group Says it Will Appeal Abortion Rules

The Center for Reproductive Rights says it will appeal a federal court opinion

The Center for Reproductive Rights says it will appeal a federal court opinion that says Texas may require a sonogram before an abortion pending resolution of a court challenge.

Three judges from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the center last week and said Texas can begin immediately enforcing a law that requires doctors to conduct a sonogram, display the image to the patient and describe what the image shows. The center, which is representing doctors who perform abortions, says the law violates the doctors First Amendment rights and interferes with the doctor-patient relationship.

The center says it will ask for a rehearing by the entire Fifth Circuit, which could include at least 18 federal judges. Lawyers representing the doctors say last week's ruling is seriously flawed.
