Prayer Vigil Held for Payton Summons; Mother Speaks Out

Summons died Friday, while she was still on life support

More than one hundred people gathered in Grand Prairie on Sunday evening to remember Payton Summons. While earlier in the day, Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas held a moment of prayer for Summons and her family.

"As people of faith, our faith says when you're hurting that's where God wants us to be a source of help," Senior Pastor Frederick Haynes said.

The 9-year-old was at the center of a life support legal battle over the past few weeks.

Summons died Friday, while she was still on life support.

"I'd just like to say thank you to the community for your support and well-wishes and prayers," said Marilyn Summons, the girl's grandmother.

At the service, Payton Summons' grandmother and aunt were greeted by hugs and applause.

"I think it's important to the family to experience this love and support. This is what has got them through. It's been a very tough time," said Justin Moore, the family's attorney.

Haynes said the church will continue to pray and support the family during this time.

"We still need prayers, but want to thank you for everything you've done," Marilyn Summons said.

The candlelight vigil was held at McFalls East Park in Grand Prairie where Summons played softball for two teams.

Teammates, parents and her coaches were on hand.

The group began with a prayer, then released purple balloons in honor of the girl.

Her mother, Tiffany Hofstetter, spoke publicly for the first time since Summons died.

"Payton was a strong, stubborn little girl, but knew how to make everyone laugh," Hofstetter said. "She's going to be greatly missed as you can see everybody showed up here. The world is not going to be the same without Payton and I can't wait til I get to see her again. I love you Payton."

Her softball coach told NBC 5 they will be holding a softball tournament in Payton's honor on Nov. 3 at McFalls East Park.

The proceeds will be going to her family, the coach said.
