Dallas County Records First Pediatric Flu-Related Death

Health officials in Dallas County confirmed Tuesday that the death of an 8-year-old child was flu-related.

County health officials aren't saying much about the patient, other than that it was a child. It is not known if the child had been vaccinated or if there were underlying health conditions.

The death is the first pediatric flu-related death for Dallas County in the 2013-2014 flu season, but the 52nd in the county overall, according to Dallas County Health and Human Services.

The last recorded flu-related death in Dallas County was in February.

The county health department learned of the death Tuesday afternoon from an area hospital.

As of this writing, there have been 83 flu-related deaths in North Texas for the 2013-2014 flu season, including 10 in Tarrant County, nine in Denton County, nine in Collin County and one each in Hunt, Hood and Wise counties.
