Bump Up Activity at Home to Lose Weight

Your daily routines can help you lose weight

If you can't afford a gym membership or can't get there very often, there is a simple way to keep burning calories: Just become more active in everything you do.

The practice is called non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT. The benefits have been confirmed by Dr. James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

"This is where our body is moving around," said Dr. Jane Sadler, who practives at the Family Medical Center at North Garland. "We're getting up out of our chair, we're sitting up straight (and) lifting water bottles at home. We might be on the phone, but we're walking around. We are not sedentary, and that's the most important thing."

Sadler said it's all in how you approach your daily life. The more you move, the less likely you are to store fat.

"Some studies show that NEAT can actually burn up to 350 calories a day," Sadler said. "And that's just people moving around a little bit more, using their arms in conversations, fidgeting."
