Circuit City Closing 9 Texas Stores, 4 in Metroplex

Store-closing sales to begin Wednesday

In an effort to make itself profitable again, Circuit City it's closing about 20 percent of its U.S. stores, including four stores in North Texas.

The 155 stores to be shut down won't open on Tuesday, but on Wednesday they will begin store-closing sales, the electronics retailer said.

Nine of the stores ticketed for closing are in Texas, including stores in Burleson, Dallas, Mansfield and McKinney. Two stores are in the Houston area, and there are one each in Sherman, Temple and the Austin suburb of Cedar Park.

The closings will prompt the layoff of about 17 percent of Circuit City's U.S. work force.

The Richmond, Va.-based company said it will shutter 155 of its more than 700 stores in 55 markets by Dec. 31. Circuit City also said it will further reduce new store openings and plans to work with landlords to renegotiate leases, lower rent or terminate agreements.

Circuit City has had only one profitable quarter in the past year. Its stores have seen a significant decline in traffic as they face heightened competition from Best Buy and others. The company said its vendors have taken restrictive actions and that the "current mix of terms and credit availability is becoming unmanageable."
