Woman Wins $10,000 Cash Prize

Grand Prairie resident Laura Dawson is rewarded from Neighborhood Credit Union

Laura Dawson got  the surprise of her life on Tuesday morning when the Neighborhood Credit Union staff knocked on her door and presented to her a $10,000 check.

Dawson said blessings like that are replacing the rough patches she has faced earlier this year.

"In March, my kitchen flooded, and three days later, my husband had major knee replacement. And of course we had to pay a lot of excess money to have our kitchen completely redone," she said.

Dawson has been a member of the credit union since 1975. The Neighborhood Credit Union has been awarding cash prizes for the past three years.

The more money the members save, the more chances they have to win. The awards are given out on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

"Throughout the years we have been enhancing it as more members have joined the credit union. We've been able to give larger and larger prizes," said Neighborhood Credit Union president Chet Kimmell.

Kimmel also said it is important to let customers know that they are being valued.

"It's a great feeling when we're able to give something back to our members in addition to the basic savings rate we offer," he said.

Dawson, who upgraded her backyard after years of saving, said living a fiscally responsible life has always been her priority. She said to be rewarded for it is unbelievable.

"This is like winning the lottery. This may not be the mega bucks, but it's certainly a nice gesture from the credit union and their diligence and my diligence at savings, and I think it's a great reward," she said.
