Northpark Center Hits High Note

Sales at North Texas' largest shopping center up 6 percent.

While many retailers expect to finish the year in the red, NorthPark Center in Dallas is seeing green.

The largest shopping mall in North Texas is reporting record sales. NorthPark said it expects this year's gross sales to exceed $930 million.

"We are very, very pleased going into the holiday season showing a sales increase of 6 percent," said Christine Szalay, NorthPark spokeswoman.

Last year's gross sales totaled $850 million, the representatives said.

"The transactions here range from $100 to $500," said Lucretia Copper, manager of new cosmetics store Fresh. "You can't tell anyone is suffering."

The Galleria in North Dallas said its sales are also up this year compared to last.

But not every mall shares NorthPark's success. Last week, General Growth Properties, which owns six malls in North Texas, announced it may be forced to file for bankruptcy.
