Gas Drilling Near Cemetery Approved

Fort Worth City Council approves gas company plan

Fort Worth City Council members approved a controversial plan Tuesday night for gas drilling near a cemetery.

The vote, which came after a few hours of citizen comments, was unanimous.

Chesepeake Energy asked for permission to drill near Greenwood Cemetery. The company said 80 percent of residents in the Crestwood neighborhood approved of the plan and had already signed contracts.

Opponents were concerned about increased truck traffic in the area, but Chesapeake said it would be temporary.

City Councilman Carter Burdette said before the company could drill, it must build a pipeline to dispose of saltwater, reducing truck traffic.
