13 North Texas Mattress Firm Stores Among 700 to Close

Houston-based retailer says 700 stores will close by year's end

Thirteen North Texas Mattress Firm stores are on the list to be closed after the company, the nation's largest mattress retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month.

The Houston-based company announced the filing Oct. 5 and said they would close up to 700 stores around the country.

The company released a listing of stores slated for closure, including 13 in the DFW area. Mattress Firm has not said when the North Texas stores would close.

In a statement to landlords earlier this month, Mattress Firm said approximately 200 closings will happen in the coming days with the remaining 500 to close throughout the end of the year.

According to court documents, Mattress Firm has more than $1 billion in liabilities and has more than 50,000 creditors. It owes its largest creditor, mattress maker Simmons Manufacturing Co., nearly $65 million.

In a statement earlier this month, CEO and president Steve Stagner said the bankruptcy filing will allow the company to "strengthen our balance sheet" and close stores in certain markets with "too many locations in close proximity to each other."

The company has more than 3,000 stores in the U.S. and in recent years had been aggressively expanding as it purchased competitors.
