Suspicious Device Found During Euless Traffic Stop

A suspicious device found in the trunk of a car during a traffic stop in Euless turned out to be a large amount of fireworks, police say.

According to police, a patrol officer made a traffic stop at about noon Tuesday and arrested the driver for outstanding traffic violations.

During an inventory of the vehicle, the device was found in the trunk.

"Due to the unknown nature of the device, the Northeast Tarrant County Bomb Squad has been requested to respond," police said in a news release.

After using a robot to investigate the scene, it was determined the device was a large collection of fireworks bundled into one large firework, which was destroyed by police.

According to Capt. Gary Landers, with the Euless Police Department, the bundle was not illegal.

While the investigation was underway, East Mid Cities Boulevard was closed in both directions between Gateway and Baze Road and a few homes near the location were also evacuated.  Just before 3:30 p.m., the roads were reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

NBC 5's Ben Russell contributed to this report.
