Ahmadinejad: Iran Martyr Neda's Death "Suspicious"
Ahmadinejad said today that Neda was killed by "unknown agents and in a suspicious" manner and that "enemies of the nation" were responsible for her slaying.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the shooting death of Neda Agha-Soltan "suspicious" and pressed the nation's authorities to investigate.

The 26-year-old woman whose shooting death at a protest in the streets of Tehran was captured on cell phone video two weeks ago became a symbol for the opposition movement in the wake of the government crackdown after the country's highly disputed elections.

Ahmadinejad said today that Neda was killed by "unknown agents and in a suspicious" manner and that "enemies of the nation" were responsible for her slaying, according to Iran's Fars news agency.

In a letter, the Iranian president urged the head of the country's judiciary to look into Neda's death and make the results of the investigation public, Fars reported.

"The massive propaganda of the foreign media, as well as other evidence, proves the interference of the enemies of the Iranian nation who want to take political advantage and darken the pure face of the Islamic republic," Ahmadinejad said in the letter.

The missive was sent after the government-sponsored Press TV quoted unidentified people who claimed there were no security forces in the area at the time of Neda's shooting death.

The network interviewed a man who spoke in Farsi with English subtitles, CNN reported.

"I didn't see who shot who," he said. "The whole scene looked suspicious to me."

The death of Neda nine days ago galvanized protesters as the video showing her collapsing to the street after she was felled by a sniper's bullet, her father desperately crying out to her as blood begins to pour from the mouth and nose went viral on the Internet.
