Manny, Dodgers Make a Strikingly Familiar Deal

Back in November, the Dodgers offered Manny Ramirez two years at $45 million, something that the player and agent Scott Boras rejected before the offer landed on their desk.

Four months later, Manny Ramirez flew out to Los Angeles Wednesday and finalized a deal. One that sounds awfully familiar…

After months of back-and-forth negotiations, a meeting Wednesday between Manny Ramirez, his agents and Los Angeles Dodgers management has culminated in a deal for the slugger. Ramirez and the Dodgers have agreed in principal on a two-year, $45 million contract, pending a physical.

The difference? The original offer had a team option (or buyout, depending on who you want to believe) after the first year. Now that power resides with Manny. And rather than all of the money in the next two years, some of it will be deferred (how much is not yet clear).

But those are trivial differences. Ramirez and his agent Scott Boras needed a few months to learn that the national economy is in shambles, the owners are both hurting themselves and fearing the size of the revenue drop they will see this year, and that years of his nutty behavior in Boston has teams a little leery of dropping big cash.

It was a frustrating and circular process. But the first time Manny drives one out of Dodger Stadium, all will be forgotten.
