You Want This Pizza

“I felt like we were in Italy sitting outside a bistro café.”

Chef Daniele Puleo has enjoyed the glow of success for six years at his flagship restaurant, Daniele Osteria in Oaklawn. But for someone who had his first taste of the business at eight years old, staying in one place isn’t good enough.

Thus, he has stretched his Sicilian roots to Fort Worth and Roanoke with Brix Pizza & Wine Bar.

His approach? Well, it’s deceptively simple.

“You need three elements which is love, need and desire. And everything you do has to have one of those elements,” said Puleo between sips of Pinot.

Add to the aforementioned elements: mozzarella made fresh daily, hand-tossed Neapolitan-style pizzas and fairly priced wines by the glass from California and Italy, and presto -- you have a pizzeria/wine bar/ patio experience worth your hard earned cheese.

Brix merges American décor (flat screens, modern fixtures and banquets covered in dark, textured materials reminiscent of a lounge) with traditional Italian fare.

“It has the ambiance of being in Europe. It’s really quaint, nice and a cozy feeling to be here,” said Myrna Kenney, who popped in for lunch before heading home to California.

The menu isn’t massive: a handful of panini, a dozen pizzas, salads and appetizers to choose from.

The moderately priced wine list showcases mainly Italian and Californian labels, with more than thirty offered by the glass.

“You have the chance to taste three or four different types of wines with out spending an arm and a leg,” said Puleo.

A nice variety of wines to choose from is a plus, but it’s also nice to hear a thick Italian accent when dining at an Italian restaurant that touts its authenticity.
