Turkey Takeout Business on the Rise

Texas tops searches for "Thanksgiving to go"

While most families are all about tradition when it comes to the Thanksgiving meal, a growing group is in search of convenience.

According to Google Insights, Texas ranks No. 1 in the country for "Thanksgiving to go" searches and No. 2 for "order turkey" searches.

And that rise in popularity includes North Texas.

"We've seen a large increase in our orders from this year to last year," said Jay Valley, chief operating officer of Eatzi's, a Dallas market and bakery.

The Melanie family says there's no shame in ordering Thanksgiving online. They picked up turkey, mashed potatoes and green-bean casserole Wednesday evening.

"It's not the 11th hour for me," Steven Melanie said. "I planned this. This is Thanksgiving dinner."

Eatzi's reports that sales are up approximately 20 percent this Thanksgiving over last year.

"It's a lot of stress involved, a lot of work, and it's easier for me to make 2,000 pounds of sweet potatoes than for Mom to make five pounds," Valley said.

Eatzi's expects to sell 250 gallons of gravy, 1,400 pounds of turkey, as well as 1 ton of cornbread stuffing -- the average weight of an elephant.

And for those of you hoping to pass off the professionals' work as your own, Valley said, "I hope it happens. That's what were here for."

Eatzi's is closed on Thanksgiving.

Central Market will be open until 2 p.m., and Whole Foods is open until 3 p.m.
