Toy Deals, But Only Until Christmas Eve

Mattel opens temporary outlet store in Richardson

It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but there are thousands of toys inside Mattel’s Seasonal Outlet Store.

And all of the items at the temporary outlet near the intersection of U.S. 75 and Spring Valley Road in Richardson are on sale.

“Lots of Barbie, lots of baby dolls, Dora -- all the things my daughter is looking for,” said Jodi Newman as she browsed the aisles.

The store, which opened in mid-October, will close on Christmas Eve. This is the second year Mattel has opened the outlet in Richardson.

“Yeah, you can expect good deals here,” said cashier Debby Stevens. “We have good prices and sales going on."

The outlet store doesn’t go out of its way to advertise, but seems to do just fine relying on word of mouth.

“I got an e-mail today at work and just decided to check it out,” Newman said.

Allen Maurice just happened to drive by and stopped in the store. The father of a 2-year-old boy had his hands full with action figures.

“Compared to Toys 'R' Us where they are $5 or $6 -- here, they are only a couple dollars,” he said.

Francisco Vazquez also left the outlet store a happy customer. He used an application on his iPhone to see what kind of deal he got on a Polly Pocket for his daughter.

“You see, the cheapest price is $19 on the Internet at Target," Vazquez said. “It’s actually 7 bucks here."

One other tip: The toy store has coupons on its Web site that you can print and use at the outlet store for even bigger discounts.

The store is open Tuesday through Saturday.

“I don’t think they are going to last,” Vazquez said. “They got so much good stuff that it's going to go quick.
