TCU's Jerry Hughes Honored

Defensive end named Sporting News All-America

TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes is a first-team All-American by Sporting News.

Hughes is now a first-team All-America selection from five outlets: Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News, Rivals.com and Phil Steele. He was a second-team All-American by the Associated Press.

Sporting News also named Hughes its 2008 Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

A junior from Sugar Land, Texas, Hughes was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award.

He tops the nation with an MWC-record 14 sacks and six forced fumbles. He also ranks in the top-10 nationally with 18.5 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries.

Additionally, he has two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown.

Hughes anchors a TCU defense that is ranked No. 1 in the nation in run defense (48.7 yards per game) while placing second in total defense (215.1 yards per game) and scoring defense (10.9 points per game) and third in sacks (41).

The 11th-ranked Horned Frogs face No. 9 Boise State in the Dec. 23 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.
