Souper Bowl of Caring Starts Food Drive

Friday is the official start to the third annual Souper Bowl of Caring, a program aimed at making sure North Texans who are hungry always have a meal to put on the table.

Students at the Winston School in Dallas helped start the event with a little cheer and a little pride.

"Last year, we collected over a thousand cans," one student said. "This year, drama alone collected over 130. We are going to do this."

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national campaign starting its third year in North Texas, helping those who turn to area food banks to keep from going hungry.

"After the holidays, people seem to forget that there's still people that need food, and the shelves are empty after the holiday, so we want to restock those shelves," said Christine Barbe, of the Souper Bowl of Caring.

"A child in a school classroom, the teacher found him eating the paper off of a crayon because he was so hungry," said Lynn Hendricks, of the North Texas Food Bank.  "The North Texas Food Bank is providing food to this child."

The program in the Metroplex is sponsored in part by an unlikely team of local grocers.

"You've got Kroger working with Tom Thumb and Albertsons on a project. That's pretty astonishing," said Gary Huddleston, of Kroger.

The Dallas Cowboys are also lending support.

"We can't turn our back on people right here that do need us," said Drew Pearson, a former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver.

It's a joint effort to fight hunger and poverty one can at a time.

"Last year Dallas/Fort Worth raised 1.1 million, and this year's goal is to raise 1.5 million," Barbe said.

The Souper Bowl of Caring ends on Feb. 7, Super Bowl Sunday. You can either purchase a prepackaged bag of food to donate, or you can donate money at one of 217 participating Kroger, Tom Thumb or Albertsons grocery stores in North Texas. Organizers say they will need a lot of volunteers leading up to Feb. 7.
